Why chimney cap installation matters

An uncapped flue is an open pipe pointed at the sky above your living room. Every winter storm sends water straight down onto the damper and smoke shelf, where it mixes with acidic soot and eats mortar joints from the inside. In summer it is an open invitation to starlings, swifts and roof rats. A cap is a few hundred dollars; the water damage it prevents runs into the thousands, and in an ember-exposed foothill neighbourhood the spark arrestor is a wildfire measure as much as a maintenance one.

If you are not satisfied with the result, we come back and make it right at no charge.

Benefits

What you get

Keeps rain out of the flue

Water inside a chimney is the single largest cause of masonry deterioration. Rain plus soot makes a mild acid that dissolves mortar joints from within.

Stops animals nesting

Starlings, chimney swifts, squirrels and roof rats all nest in open flues. A nest is a blockage, and a blockage is a carbon monoxide risk.

Contains sparks and embers

A spark arrestor screen stops burning embers landing on your roof or your neighbour's — which matters a great deal in this part of California.

Reduces downdrafts

A properly sized cap breaks the wind that would otherwise push down the flue and blow smoke and cold air into the room.

Stainless, not galvanised

Galvanised caps rust through in a few Sacramento winters and stain the brick orange on the way out. Stainless lasts decades.

Custom-fit, not forced

Flues vary. We measure yours and fit a cap that actually seats and fastens, instead of wedging a stock size on and hoping.

Warning signs

When to book chimney cap installation

  • You can see open flue tile when you look up at the chimney from the ground
  • Water dripping into the firebox, or a damper that is rusted or seized
  • Birds, scratching, chirping or rustling sounds inside the chimney
  • Rust stains streaking down the exterior brick or stucco
  • A visibly bent, lifted, or missing cap after a windstorm
  • Nesting material, leaves or twigs falling into the firebox
  • A rusted-through galvanised cap or a crushed screen
  • You live in an ember-exposed area and have no spark arrestor

Process

How we do it

Measure the flue properly

Outside dimensions of the tile, the number of flues, and the crown condition. Multi-flue chimneys often need one custom cap rather than several small ones.

Recommend the right style

Single-flue, multi-flue, outside-mount, or a full crown-covering cap depending on your chimney and how much crown protection you need.

Check the crown underneath

There is no point capping a chimney over a cracked crown. If the crown needs sealing we tell you before we fit the cap, not after.

Install and fasten from the roof

Stainless cap seated square and mechanically fastened so it survives Delta breeze gusts, not just set in place.

Photograph the finished install

You get pictures from the roof, because almost nobody goes up to check.

Questions

Chimney Cap Installation FAQs

How much does a chimney cap cost?

It depends on flue size, how many flues the chimney has, and roof access. A standard single-flue stainless cap is at the affordable end; a custom multi-flue cap covering the whole crown costs more because it is fabricated to your chimney. We give you a firm number before any work begins, and the estimate is free.

Stainless or galvanised — is it worth the difference?

Stainless, every time. Galvanised caps are cheaper up front and typically rust through within a handful of Sacramento winters, then streak rust down your brick. Stainless routinely lasts decades. The price gap is small and the lifespan difference is not.

Is a spark arrestor required in California?

For wood-burning chimneys, a spark arrestor screen is required by the California Building and Fire Codes, and it matters more in ember-exposed foothill neighbourhoods than almost anywhere else. Most modern caps combine the rain cover and arrestor screen in one unit.

Will a cap stop downdrafts completely?

It reduces them substantially and often solves the problem entirely. If wind-driven downdraft persists after capping, the usual cause is chimney height relative to the roofline or nearby trees, and the fix is a taller flue or a specialised draft-correcting cap. We will tell you which you are dealing with.

Can you cap a chimney that has animals living in it?

Not until they are out. Sealing an animal inside means it dies in the flue, which becomes a blockage and a serious odour problem. Chimney swifts are also federally protected while nesting. We clear the flue first, then cap it so nothing returns.

How long does installation take?

Most single-flue caps take under an hour once we are on the roof. Custom multi-flue caps need measuring on a first visit and fitting on a second, because they are fabricated to your dimensions.
